The Never Ending Tool Sale

It’s that time of year again when the halls of the Malls are jam packed with Christmas shoppers, which is how I ended up at the great holiday tool time sale at Home Depot—talk about heaven!   (Actually, I had another word in mind, but I’m not sure I can use that in a Christian newspaper).   Unless you know a little something about the art of selecting the perfect tool for your not so perfect man—finding yourself in the middle of a tool sale can be a bit overwhelming.   Fear took a grip, as I stood knee deep in socket wrenches, deluged by five different types of hammers, wondering if the men in my life would enjoy an electric screwdriver or should I buy them the old fashion kind?   I suddenly found myself grasping for breath, ogling women’s boots on sale just across the isle.    I couldn’t wait to get out of hardware heaven and into familiar territory—women’s clothing!   I should pretend to at least be somewhat interested, in tools (not boo...

Democracy

"Two cheers for democracy: one because it admits variety and two because it permits criticism." E.M. Foster Whether your candidate won or lost, the election is over.  We need to come together now as a nation and let the healing process begin, supporting and encouraging one another in Christian love. The Bible says we ought to exhort one another and that includes the leaders of our country.  Even with all its flaws America is still the greatest place on earth to live. Tomorrow is Veterans Day.  Thank you to all of those men and women who have fought to keep our land the home of the brave and the free.  God Bless America.

The Worth of One's Hands

His Banner – November 2016 The worth of one’s hands By Connie Hawkins A basketball in my hands is worth about $19. A basketball in Michael Jordan's hands is worth about $33 million.   It depends whose hands it's in. A baseball in my hands is worth about $6. A baseball in Mark McGuire's hands is worth $19 million It depends whose hands it's in. A rod in my hands will keep away a wild animal.   A rod in Moses' hands will part the mighty sea It depends whose hands it's in. A slingshot in my hands is a kid's toy.   A slingshot in David's hand is a mighty weapon. It depends whose hands it's in. Two fish and five loaves of bread in my hands is a couple of fish sandwiches.   Two fish and five loaves of bread in God's hands will feed thousands. It depends whose hands it's in Nails in my hands might produce a birdhouse, although I wouldn’t count on it.   Nails in Jesus Christ's hands will produce salvation ...

When He Comes

His Banner – October 2016 When He Comes By Connie Hawkins             My late business partner, love to sing.   You’d often hear him humming a tune in the office, around the house or in his car.   One of his favorite chorus’ was “When He Comes.”   He would sing it solo in his church on a Sunday morning, sometimes.   I like the words and the meaning behind them.   In thinking about these words, it reminds me to ready myself for his coming and the holy harmony we shall all enjoy when we get to that heavenly place of joy and peace.   When He Comes Thou shalt know Him when He comes, Not by any din of drums, Nor His manner, nor His airs,   nor by anything He wears. Thou shalt know Him when He comes, Not by His crown or by His gown, But His coming known shall be, By the holy harmony which His coming makes in thee. Thou shalt know Him when He comes, when he comes...

Surprise - it's my birthday!

Image
My husband and children surprised me today (April 16, 2016) with a 70th birthday party.   Yes, my family and friends got me good!  A birthday is a good time to remember family and friends.  Actually, at my age it's a good time to remember anything at all! :) Now that I've reached another milestone birthday...I can truthfully say that having a birthday is good for your health.  Studies show that those who have more birthdays live longer!  God has been good to me these 70 years.  I consider it a privilege to be alive, to breathe, to think, to laugh, to love, to write, to enjoy my family and friends.

The Ultimate Sacrifice - April 2015

His Banner – April 2015 Connie’s Corner The Ultimate Sacrifice By Connie Hawkins The season of Lent followed by Easter is a time to remind us of the ultimate sacrifice –Jesus’ death on the cross. Romans 5:8 says “God shows his love for us in that while we were sinners, Christ died for us.”   There are four different types of love spoken about in the Bible. one of which is Agape love.   Agape is defined as selfless, sacrificial, unconditional love – the highest form of love.   This Greek word and variations of it are found throughout the New Testament.   Agape love perfectly describes the kind of love Jesus has for his Father and for his followers. “Whoever has my commandments and keeps them is the one who loves me.   The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.” (John 14:21, NIV) It amazes me when I look at the shape our world is in that God still loves mankind. No matter what man does, God...

Forgiveness - February 2014

His Banner – February 2014 Love and Forgiveness By Connie Hawkins   February is kind of a hum-drum month, at least it is for me.   I think as I sit at my computer, I should write something about love…thinking about love got me thinking about things and people that need to be forgiven.     Don’t let another year go by harboring bitterness and anger – those things can destroy you.   God’s Word says do not let the sun go down on your anger.   Don’t let another year go by without telling someone who has wronged you or someone you have hurt that you forgive them and while you’re at it – tell that someone that you love them.
